Arusha. The Northern Zone office of the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) revealed on Thursday that it carried out over 2,000 inspections of various development projects between July and December 2024 to ensure compliance with environmental protection laws.
Speaking to the press, on Thursday January 16, 2025 NEMC’s Northern Zone Manager, Mr Benjamin Dotto, stated that the inspections covered a range of sectors, including healthcare, tourism, energy, and agriculture, in line with promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development.
“We supervised 1,286 health projects, 317 tourism projects, 247 energy projects, 201 timber industries, 176 industrial investments, and 118 agricultural projects,” he said, adding that warehouse construction, mining, and infrastructure were also closely monitored.
Mr Dotto stressed that Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are mandatory for all major projects, such as roads, industries, and mines, before they can be implemented.
“All development projects must undergo Environmental Impact Assessments to secure Environmental Certificates,” he affirmed.
