Dar es Salaam. Nine major roads in Dar es Salaam will be temporarily closed for six days starting Saturday, January 25, 2025, to facilitate the arrival of dignitaries for the Africa Energy Conference.

During this period, access to the city center will be prohibited for bajajis and bodabodas.

The conference, scheduled for January 27–28, 2025, is expected to draw over 25 African presidents and 60 ministers from various countries.

In a statement issued by the Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro the closures will remain in effect from January 25 until January 30, 2025, due to the high-profile nature of the event.

The affected roads include Nyerere Road, stretching from Julius Nyerere International Airport to the city center, as well as Sokoine, Kivukoni, and Lithuli Roads, starting from the Gerezani traffic lights toward Johari Rotana Hotel, Hyatt Regency, and the State House.

Additionally, Ohio Road from Kivukoni to Serena Hotel, Ghana Road from Ohio Road to Onomo Hotel, and Bibi Titi Road from the intersection of Ohio and Ally Hassan Mwinyi Roads to the Crown Plaza Hotel will be closed.

Azikiwe Road, which leads to the Four Points Hotel, Golden Tulip City Center, and Holiday Inn, will also face restricted access.

Morogoro Road from Sokoine to Tiffany No. 1 Hotel and Makunganya Road from Azikiwe to Tiffany No. 2 Hotel will be closed, as will Garden Road from Lithuli to the Southern Sun Hotel and the Julius Nyerere International Conference Centre (JNICC).

In light of the closures, the police are advising road users to use alternative routes, including Uhuru Road, Kawawa Road via Magomeni and Kigogo to Temeke, as well as Morogoro Road, Msimbazi, Morogoro, and Lumumba Roads.

Those traveling from the Chanika area are advised to use the SGR project’s alternative route, exiting onto Mandela and Uhuru Roads.

Due to security concerns, motorcycles (bodabodas) and tricycles (bajajis) will be prohibited from entering the city center during this period. Riders are advised to stop at designated points:  Motorcyclists on Ally Hassan Mwinyi Road will stop at Salender Bridge.

Those on Morogoro Road will stop at Jangwani. Road users on Kawawa Road from Magomeni will stop at Kigogo Sambusa.

Those on Uhuru Road from Buguruni will stop at Ilala Boma.

On Nyerere Road from the airport and Veta, users will stop at Veta traffic lights. Riders on Kilwa Road will stop at Mivinjeni.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police urges all residents to comply with these instructions and assured that alternative routes will be well-managed to alleviate traffic congestion.
