Tanga. The presidential candidate of the National League for Democracy (NLD), Doyo Hasaan Doyo, was spotted at a funeral in Tanga where he also took the opportunity to reach out to voters as part of his campaign trail.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s schedule, Mr Doyo was supposed to be in Dar es Salaam today, before officially launching his campaign in Tanga tomorrow, September 4, 2025.

He arrived at the funeral at around 11:30 a.m. accompanied by the NLD regional secretary for Tanga, Boniface Gideon and other party officials. Mourners expressed eagerness to greet him, which he used as an occasion to subtly seek their support.

Speaking at the funeral, Mr Doyo said he had to cut short his Dar es Salaam schedule after learning of the death of the mother of Mwanamkuu Issa, a veteran journalist with Radio Mwambao, with whom he had long worked.

“We have come to condole with a distinguished journalist whom I have worked with for many years in the media industry. I wear two hats here: as a journalist and as a fellow Tanzanian. Since the bereaved is one of us, I felt compelled to come,” Mr Doyo said.

He emphasised that death is a moment of compassion, where solidarity is necessary. “When you hear that someone has lost a loved one, you must feel moved to attend the burial. This is something that no one in society should take lightly,” he added.

On his campaign schedule, Mr Doyo said everything was progressing well and he was grateful for the cooperation he continued to receive from various stakeholders. He noted that there were no major obstacles, only minor challenges.

“Tomorrow we shall hold a rally in Tanga town to present our policies to the people. Tanga is my home, and I trust that my fellow citizens will not let me down. As NLD, we are confident of securing sufficient votes,” he said.

Mr Doyo hails from Misima ward in Handeni District, Tanga Region. He began his political career in CUF before joining ADC, and earlier this year crossed over to NLD, where he was endorsed as the party’s presidential flagbearer.
