NSSF collects Sh20bn from Kigamboni Bridge

Dodoma. The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has collected a total of Sh19.7 billion from the Kigamboni toll bridge until March 2018, the Parliament heard on Friday, June 22, 2018.

The Deputy Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled), Mr Anthony Mavunde told the House that out of the money, Sh15 billion was collected from vehicle owners who ply the road while Sh4.71 billion was in form of interest gained through investing the collected money in treasury bonds.

Mr Mavunde was responding to a question from Ms Zainab Amiri (CUF – Special Seats) who wanted to know how much the government collected so far from the toll bridge has.

Meanwhile, Mr Mavunde ruled out the possibility of removing toll imposed on users of the 680-metre Kigamboni Bridge, also known as Nyerere Bridge, saying the facility was built like any other investment project for the NSSF.

In her supplementary question, Ms Amiri asked the government to consider removing the toll so that people can move with their vehicles across the bridge freely.

She said for instance, commuters are required to pay Sh7000 each time they cross the bridge which she said, was too expensive for them to make a profit.
