Only 15pc of Tanzania’s land surveyed, government reveals

The Minister of  Land, Housing and Human Settlement Development Hon. William Lukuvi.

What you need to know:

The government said on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 that only 15 per cent of the country’s land was surveyed.

Dodoma. The government said yesterday that only 15 per cent of the country’s land is surveyed.

This was said in Parliament by Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development deputy minister Angelina Mabula during the question and answer session.

She was responding to a question directed to the ministry by Special Seats legislator Ruth Mollel (Chadema), who sought to know the budget trend for surveying land between 2010 and 2015 and the size of the area already covered by the exercise.

“So far the government has covered 2 million plots measuring 141,750 KM squares. This represents 15 per cent of all land that we have,” said Ms Mabula.

She said between 2015 and 2018 some Sh6.3 billion was disbursed for the purpose (surveying).

However, the surveying trend was strongly criticised by Ms Mollel on the grounds that the speed for the exercise was not promising.

“This might be attributed to budget deficit allocated for surveying,” she stressed.

The ministry’s minister William Lukuvi urged the district councils to ensure plots at their areas were surveyed.

“We will do whatever it takes to survey the all of our land,” said Mr Lukuvi.
