Opposition MPs protest swearing in of Zanzibar reps

Dodoma. Opposition MPs walked out of the debating chamber this morning in  protest of the swearing in of five new representatives from Zanzibar.

In a move that appears to be planned, the opposition lawmakers arrived early to the hall and walked out when the National Assembly clerk Dr Thomas Kashilila started calling the new members to take their oaths. 

The National Assembly is constitutionally made up of elected and appointed MP and five members from the House of Representatives in Zanzibar.

However, CUF refused to participate in the March 20, 2016 Zanzibar re-election and therefore do not recognise the new CCM members.

Four representatives took the oath and one did not attend.

The four include; Ms Amina Iddi Mabrouk, Mr Hussein Ibrahim Makungu, Mr Machano Othman Said and Ms Wanu Hafidh Ameir.

Mr Jaku Hashim Ayoub did not attend.
