Penile transplant at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital to cost Sh6 million

Dodoma. Several days after the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital revealed that they could perform penile transplants, the hospital has announced the cost, saying it will be between Sh6 million and Sh10 million.

This was said by the Executive Director of the hospital, Dr. Alphonce Chandika, on Tuesday, August 1, while explaining the budget priorities for the financial year 2023–24.

Dr. Chandika said that the hospital launched the service after they found out that there was a big challenge that has made the traditional healers patrol the streets with herbs that they believe can cure problems.

"We, as a public institution, saw there was a need to come up with a strategy to help these men with such challenges. For that reason, we started providing this service. We started with two men," he said.

And the good news, according to Dr. Chandika, is that they are both doing well because they adhered to the instructions, which required them to be involved in sexual intercourse for six weeks.

"They told us that their performances have improved and they are now fit."

He added that due to popular demand, they intend to widen the scope of coverage to make the service accessible to more people.

He has said that the institution that produces the implants has moved its services to Dar es Salaam and is currently in the process of registration so that the implants can be easily found.

Dr. Chandika has said it is their hope that other hospitals will start providing this service because the demand is relatively high.

He said that though many may consider the cost to be high, it is not comparable to the shame that penile dysfunction may cause an individual.
