Iringa. Police in Iringa Region have launched manhunt for an officer and a militia member, for their alleged involvement in the brutal killing of the municipality resident.

Sergeant Rogers of Ipogolo Police Post and Thomas Mkembela, a militia member, allegedly assaulted Nashon Kiyeyeu (23), a resident of Nyamhanga neighbourhood in Kitwiru Ward, during an interrogation over accusations of mobile phone theft.

Iringa Regional Police Commander Allan Bukumbi, confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday.

“The suspects detained the victim over allegations of stealing a mobile phone from an unidentified individual. During their interrogation, they severely assaulted him, leaving him unconscious,” Mr Bukumbi told reporters on Sunday December 15, 2024.

Rather than seeking immediate medical attention or formally documenting the case, the two suspects reportedly transported the victim to a private hospital and later to Iringa Regional Referral Hospital.

Tragically, Nashon succumbed to his injuries, prompting the suspects to flee the scene.

"We have initiated an intensive manhunt for the officer and the militia member, who fled without filing any report at the police station," Commander Bukumbi disclosed.

“Even the deceased’s father, who visited the police post to seek answers, was not provided with any explanation regarding the matter.”

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nashon sustained injuries consistent with a violent assault, fuelling public outrage and demands for justice.

The incident has sparked widespread anger among residents of Iringa, who are calling for swift justice and a transparent investigation.

Many have criticised what they perceive as unchecked impunity within law enforcement and auxiliary forces. Residents are demanding accountability and measures to curb police brutality.

Authorities have assured the public that all efforts are being made to apprehend the suspects and restore confidence in law enforcement.
