Dar es Salaam. A total of 30 drivers in Dar es Salaam have had their licences suspended for six months after being found driving with alcohol levels exceeding the legal limit of 80 milligrams, police said on Thursday January 2, 2025.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander, Mr Jumanne Murilo, said a total of 179 drivers were arrested and tested for alcohol consumption before and after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

“Among the arrested drivers, 30 had alcohol levels exceeding 80 milligrams. Of these, 22 were from Kinondoni District, six from Ilala District, and two from Temeke District,” said Mr Murilo.

He explained that the licences of drivers with excessive alcohol levels were suspended in accordance with the Road Traffic Act to enhance road safety and deter “reckless” behaviour.

Mr Murilo also revealed that on December 17, 2024, the police apprehended a resident of Kipunguni Mashariki in the city for alleged burglary and theft. The suspect is accused of stealing three televisions, four decoders, and a pesticide sprayer.

Additionally, he noted that six individuals were convicted in various courts in Dar es Salaam between November and December 2024. Of these, two were sentenced to life imprisonment, while four received 30-year jail terms.

Commander Murilo called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement by participating in community policing initiatives aimed at preventing criminal activities.
