What you need to know:

Business stopped for over three hours due to the power blackout that has been blamed on technical faults by the national power utility.

Dar es Salaam. Tanzania’s national power grid on yesterday collapsed and caused power interruption in regions connected to the national grid for over three hours.

Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (Tanesco) said the interruption was due to technical faults, which occurred at around 1:42 pm.

The statement, released by Tanesco’s Communications Unit said that the company’s technicians were working hard to restore the power to the affected regions.

However, it was not disclosed exactly when the power interruption would be resolved.

Dar es Salaam, the largest commercial city, was the most affected region.

According to the Energy Access Situation Report 2016 released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Rural Energy Agency (REA), Dar es Salaam has the highest proportion of households connected to electricity of any form (75.2 per cent) followed by Njombe Region (50.5 per cent), Kilimanjaro (42.6 per cent) and Katavi (40.0 per cent).
