President Alassane Ouattara to receive Africa Prize for Peace 2025

President Alassane Ouattara

The African Conference for Promoting Peace has announced that President Alassane Ouattara, of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, will be awarded the prestigious "Africa Prize for Promoting Peace 2025."

The award will be formally presented during the opening session of the Fifth International Forum of the African Conference for Promoting Peace, which will be held in Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, from January 21 to 23, 2025.

This significant event is organized in partnership with the Mauritanian government and the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum, and will take place under the high patronage of His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Republic of Mauritania.

The forum will bring together prominent African leaders and peace advocates to discuss the future of peace and stability across the continent.

The Africa Prize for Promoting Peace recognizes individuals, institutions, and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to promoting and sustaining peace across Africa. Past recipients include Mohamed Bazoum, President of Niger (2022), Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria (2023), and Adama Barrow, President of The Gambia (2024).

This year, the award’s Supreme Committee has unanimously selected President Ouattara for his exceptional leadership in fostering peace and dialogue throughout Africa.

As the head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Ouattara has played a pivotal role in addressing regional crises and facilitating vital reconciliation efforts. His leadership in guiding Côte d'Ivoire through a national reconciliation process after years of political strife has set a powerful example for peacebuilding across the continent.

Sheikh Mahfoudh bin Bayyah, General Coordinator of the African Conference for Promoting Peace, commended President Ouattara's steadfast commitment to peaceful solutions and shared human values.

“President Ouattara’s dedication to dialogue, his tireless mediation efforts in West Africa, and his unifying role in his home country were key factors in our decision to award him the Africa Prize for Promoting Peace 2025,” said Sheikh Mahfoudh.

As Africa faces ongoing challenges, including political instability, conflicts, and social unrest, President Ouattara’s efforts stand as a beacon of hope. His leadership shows that dialogue, reconciliation, and peacebuilding can drive meaningful change, offering a model for other African nations striving to overcome division and build a prosperous, peaceful future.

The presentation of the Africa Prize for Promoting Peace 2025 will take place in a grand ceremony in Nouakchott on January 21, 2025. President Ouattara will be honored for his outstanding contributions to peace and unity across the continent, reaffirming the belief that, as he has stated, “Without peace, nothing is possible.”
