President Magufuli appoints Bashiru Ally new Chief Secretary and Ambassador

- President John Magufuli on Friday appointed the ruling party (CCM) secretary general Bashiru Ally to be the country’s chief secretary to replace John Kijazi who passed on last week.

Dar es Salaam. President John Pombe Magufuli has appointed Dr Bashiru Ally Kakurwa the new chief secretary and ambassador.
Before the appointment, Dr Bashiru was the Secretary General of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
Dr Ally, who led the committee that traced the ruling party’s assets, was appointed the party’s top executive in 2018.
He replaced the party’s former secretary general Abdulrahman Kinana whose tenure had ended. Tanzania was recently robbed of its prominent people, including leaders.
The First Vice President of Zanzibar, Seif Sharif Hamad, died on Wednesday February 17 after his opposition party admitted he had contracted coronavirus. Ambassador John Kijazi, who was the Chief Secretary, also died on the same day.
Yesterday’s appointment was received with mixed reactions with others expressing their optimism for better leadership.
Many others were taken by surprise as they probably expected to hear some familiar name from the public service. An analyst from the University of Dodoma, Dr Paul Luisulie, said Dr Ally was the right appointment following his performance in the ruling party.
“I have no doubt with Dr Ally especially by looking at what he was doing as the CCM secretary general. He was a good executive,” he said. A lecturer at the University of Dodoma, Mr Frank Tilly, said Dr Ally was a good executive but could face challenges in the beginning.
“Yes, he was leading the ruling party very well but running government operations is different from that of the party. It will take him time to learn and adjust accordingly,” he said.
A lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, Mr Faraja Kristomus, was optimistic with Dr Ally, stressing: “that is his area of academic specialization.”
