Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged support for the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), promising to ensure soldiers experience better days at all times.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) on September 20, 2024, President Hassan, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, acknowledged that TPDF personnel face both challenges and triumphs in their service to the nation.
“I understand that there are times when you go through good and bad periods, but we will ensure that they always experience better times,” she reassured, as the nation celebrates 60 years of the TPDF.
Reflecting on the milestone, she commended the leadership of the military, particularly the chiefs of Defence Forces, for steering the armed forces since the country's independence in 1961.
“The 60 years of TPDF are a result of the dedicated work of those who have led the military, right from the chiefs of defence to the ministers who have overseen the Ministry of Defence and National Service since Tanganyika’s independence,” she said.
In a gesture of gratitude, President Hassan praised the military for their continued efforts in safeguarding the country’s borders and upholding the Constitution.
She also emphasised that her government remains committed to equipping the forces with the tools and resources they need to perform their duties effectively.
“The government stands with you in everything you do. We are also doing everything possible to make sure you have the equipment and support necessary to protect our nation,” she assured.
The President highlighted the role the TPDF plays not only in national defence but also in disaster response and civilian support.
“The military has always been a saviour in times of disasters—whether it’s environmental crises or disease outbreaks,” she noted, citing the military’s swift action during natural calamities.
“Tanzania is surrounded by seven to eight countries, and our military is responsible for ensuring that all these borders—whether on land, sea, or air—are secure,” she explained.
Outside the country, the TPDF has earned recognition for its peacekeeping efforts. According to the Head of State, the military has actively participated in peacekeeping missions through the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and has even volunteered in some cases as a national force.
“The TPDF has always been willing to contribute to global peace, whether through SADC forces or by volunteering as a nation,” she said.
Beyond defence, the TPDF is also involved in nation-building projects, including training the youth through the National Service (JKT) and constructing its own residential housing.
“The military is currently handling several contracts, contributing significantly to development projects across the country,” President Hassan added.
