Prof Sarungi, Tanzanian renowned surgeon and politician, dies at 88

Dar es Salaam. Professor Philemon Mikol Sarungi, a prominent surgeon, medical educator and former Tanzanian cabinet minister, passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 88.
The family spokesperson, Martin Obwago Sarungi, confirmed the news in a brief message.
He said Prof Sarungi died peacefully in Dar es Salaam.
“Funeral arrangements are underway at the family home in Oysterbay, Dar es Salaam,” the brief message noted.
Born on March 23, 1936, in Tarime, Tanzania, to Sarungi Igogo Yusufu and Amimo (Maria) Sarungi, Prof Sarungi led a life dedicated to public service and excellence.
His academic journey was distinguished, beginning with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Medicine in Szeged, Hungary, in 1966.
He went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in Surgery from the same institution in 1970.
Furthering his medical expertise, he completed a Diploma in Orthopaedics and Trauma from the University of Medicine in Vienna in 1973, followed by a Diploma in Replantation Surgery from the University of Shanghai in 1975.

Medical educator
Returning to Tanzania, Professor Sarungi embarked on a career in medical education at the University of Dar es Salaam, where he shaped the future of the country’s healthcare system.
He served as a lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor, and ultimately as professor and head of the department of surgery from 1971 until 1984.
During this period, he made invaluable contributions to the development of medical education in Tanzania, mentoring countless students who would go on to make significant impacts in the field.
During his academic career, Prof Sarungi served as the director general of Muhimbili Medical Centre from 1984 to 1990.
His efforts in healthcare management and medical reform were pivotal in enhancing the quality of healthcare services in the country.
Politics
Professor Sarungi’s public service career was equally illustrious. He served as the Member of Parliament for the Rorya constituency (CCM).
From 1990 he held several key cabinet positions, including as minister of Health, minister of Communications and Transport, minister of Defence and National Service and minister of Education and Culture.
The family of Professor Sarungi, along with the Nyiratha wa Utegi clan, has expressed their profound gratitude for the support shown during this difficult time.
