Relief for motorists in Tanzania as fuel prices drop in June

What you need to know:

  • Changes in the prices of petroleum products in June 2024 are attributed to a decrease in world oil prices (Free on Board - FOB) by an average of 11.82 percent for petrol, 7.77 percent for diesel, and 7.94 percent for kerosene

Dar es Salaam. Motorists in Tanzania will pay less for petrol and diesel as the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) revises the prices in response to global rates.

Ewura said on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, that a litre of petrol shipped in through the port of Dar es Salaam will now be sold at Sh3,261.

This is a 1.5 percent decrease from the May 2024 price of Sh3,314.

The prices, which become effective from today Wednesday, June 5th, 2024, will also include a 2.62 percent drop for a litre of diesel.

A litre of diesel will now be Sh3,112, slightly down from Sh3,196 of the preceding month.

A litre of kerosene will be sold at Sh3,261, a slight jump from Sh2,840 charged in May.

“Changes in the prices of petroleum products in June 2024 are attributed to a decrease in world oil prices (Free on Board - FOB) by an average of 11.82 percent for petrol, 7.77 percent for diesel, and 7.94 percent for kerosene,” said Ewura’s director general Dr James Mwainyekule.

Dr Mwainyekule said on Wednesday that other factors determining the announced prices include a 1.4 percent depreciation of the Tanzanian Shilling against the US Dollar and a decrease in premiums for the importation of petroleum products by an average of 2.06 percent for petrol and 8.51 percent for diesel at Dar es Salaam Port.

Dr Mwainyekule said there was also a decrease in premiums for the importation of petroleum products by an average of 10.14 percent for petrol and 23.18 percent for diesel imported via Tanga Port and a decrease by an average of 5.32 percent for both petrol and diesel imported through Mtwara Port.

As a result cap prices of petrol and diesel imported from those ports decreased.

Fuel exported through the Tanga Port will go for Sh3,263 for a litre of petrol, lower than the Sh3,360 that was charged in May, while a litre of diesel will be sold for Sh3,121 from Sh3, 242 and that of kerosene will be Sh3, 307 from Sh2,886.

Fuel exported through the Mtwara Port will go for Sh3,267 for a litre of petrol a price lower than the Sh3,317  that was charged prior, while a litre of diesel will be sold for Sh 3,122 from Sh3,200  and that of kerosene will be Sh3,333 from Sh2,913.

“Moreover, the changes in petroleum prices are attributed to the change in the exchange rate and a continuous use of the Euro for the payment of imported petroleum products,” he said.
