S864m lab for engineering courses launched in Arusha

Arusha. A modern hydraulics laboratory costing about $400,000 (Sh864 million) was launched on Saturday at the Arusha Technical College (ATC).
The permanent secretary in the ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ms Maimuna Tarishi, inaugurated the facility which will be used for practical training in civil and irrigation engineering courses.
“The lab will be equipped with the latest technology that would ensure we train competent engineers,” said ATC Rector Dr. Joseph Masika as he invited the PS to the lab at the basement of a multi-storeyed new building.
ATC, an autonomous training institution under the ministry, introduced a training programme in civil and irrigation engineering for engineers and technicians in 2010/2011 and 2011/2013, respectively.
In response to a government request, in June 2011, the Japan International Co-operation Agency (Jica) dispatched two experts to assist the college in capacity building of academic staff in teaching both theory and practicals in the courses.
Todate, three batches of qualified engineers have graduated at the college.
Thereafter, on June 14, 2014, the then ministry of Education and Vocational Training and Jica signed a technical co-operation agreement aimed at developing capacity of the Arusha-based college in terms of irrigation human resources.
