Samia launches Uhuru torch race

Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan lights the Uhuru Torch at Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro. The Uhuru Torch is one of the National Symbols of Tanzania It is a kerosene torch. It symbolises freedom and light. It was first lit on top of Mt Kilimanjaro on December 9, 1961.

Quoting the first President the late Mwl Nyerere, the Vice President said that the aim of the national torch is,  "to bring hope where there is no hope, to remove hatred where there is hatred and to bring respect where there is none."


Dar es Salaam.  Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan has launched the national torch race at Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro today.

Quoting the first President the late Mwl Nyerere, the Vice President said that the aim of the national torch is,  "to bring hope where there is no hope, to remove hatred where there is hatred and to bring respect where there is none."

“This year’s motto for the national torch race is: Youths are the national manpower, they should be involved and empowered,” said Vice President.

 According to Samia. the mantra; youths as the manpower, has not been effectively utilised  as can be seen by the high levels of unemployment in the country. 

 She also warned youths to protect themselves against  HIV/Aids infections and the use of drugs. Adding that youth of 16-24 years are greatly affected by HIV/Aids. 

 On her part, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Jenista Mhagama said that celebrations to extinguish the national torch will be carried out in Simiyu Region on 14 October this year.
