Samia to open high-level Pan African media summit

Dar es Salaam. As the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) marks 30 years of its establishment, more than 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the Pan African Media Council Summit, scheduled to take place from July 14 to 17 at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).
The four-day summit, organised by MCT, will feature a series of events, including high-level dialogues, exhibitions, and celebrations to commemorate the council’s three decades of advancing media freedom and professionalism.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, June 21, 2025, MCT Executive Secretary, Mr Ernest Sungura said the summit, themed Advancing Media and Communication Regulations for Journalism Excellence in Africa, will focus on three key areas.
“These include professional discussions on emerging regulatory challenges in journalism across the continent, exhibitions on media and communication technologies, and a commemorative event marking MCT’s 30-year journey of promoting media ethics and freedom,” said Mr Sungura.
Highlighting MCT’s achievements over the past three decades, Mr Sungura said the council has trained approximately 5,000 journalists nationwide.
He added that President Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to officiate the summit, while Zanzibar President, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has confirmed his participation as a special guest.
The event is also set to attract several high-profile dignitaries, including UNESCO’s Deputy Director-General for Communication and Information, Dr Tawfik Jelassi, as well as senior media policymakers and ministers from Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and other African countries.
The summit is being held in collaboration with the Network of Independent Media Councils of Africa (NIMCA), the East Africa Press Councils (EAPC), and the World Association of Press Councils (WAPC).
Mr Sungura further noted that at least 150 foreign delegates are expected to join local media stakeholders, making the gathering one of the continent’s largest on media governance this year.
Development partners and sponsors for the event include Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, UNESCO, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), Tanzania National Parks Authority (Tanapa), Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), and Azam Media, among others.
