Tanga. President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s recent seven-day tour of Tanga Region has set the stage for economic revitalisation, with key infrastructure, industrial and trade initiatives aimed at transforming the region into a major commercial hub.

During the tour, which concluded on Saturday, March 1, 2025, the President laid foundation stones for major projects, inaugurated new developments, and addressed challenges affecting economic growth.

The trip underscored her administration’s commitment to restoring Tanga’s historical significance as an industrial powerhouse while enhancing infrastructure to boost trade and investment.

Toll road

One of the most notable directives from the President was the construction of a toll road via Singida to facilitate cargo transportation from Tanga Port.

The move is expected to ease logistical constraints, making the port a more competitive alternative to Dar es Salaam and Mombasa.

Additionally, the government has pledged to expand Tanga Port’s capacity and streamline operations to attract more shipping traffic.

Speaking at the port, President Hassan directed the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) to eliminate inefficiencies and curb corruption, ensuring smooth operations that will attract investors and traders.

 Industrial revival

In line with her administration’s vision of economic transformation, President Hassan stressed the need to revitalise Tanga’s industries. She instructed the Attorney General and the Treasury Registrar to review privatisation contracts of dormant factories and large farms to ensure they benefit local communities.

“Restoring Tanga’s industrial status is a top priority. We have already begun expanding existing industries and setting up new ones to generate employment and increase production,” she said.

Among the key projects launched was the construction of a new cement and lime factory, which is expected to boost local manufacturing and create hundreds of jobs. Additionally, she officiated the expansion of Tanga’s central mosque and the launch of Phase II of a gas cylinder distribution programme, further boosting local businesses.

Agriculture and fisheries

The President’s visit also focused on agriculture and fisheries, sectors that form the backbone of the region’s economy. She laid the foundation stone for the Mkomazi Irrigation Dam, which is expected to improve agricultural productivity and food security in the region. Additionally, she launched 20 fishing boats and 50 seaweed farming boats, offering a significant boost to the region’s fishing industry. These investments aim to empower local fishermen and enhance Tanzania’s seafood exports.

Energy and natural resources

Recognising the role of energy in industrial growth, President Hassan directed the ministry of Energy to revise policies to ensure fuel suppliers in the Northern Zone can source energy from Tanga instead of Dar es Salaam. This move is expected to reduce operational costs for businesses in the region. The President also officiated the construction of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plant by GBP, which is expected to enhance energy security and attract further investment in the energy sector.

Throughout the tour, President Hassan emphasised good governance as a pillar of economic growth. She called for strict oversight in land management, particularly urging authorities to review the use of large farms and industrial plots to ensure they contribute to economic development.

Additionally, she directed district authorities to prioritise service delivery, ensuring that infrastructure investments translate into tangible benefits for the people of Tanga.

A new dawn for Tanga’s economy

President Hassan’s visit signals a new chapter for Tanga, with strategic investments poised to revitalise key sectors, create jobs, and enhance trade opportunities. Her commitment to industrial expansion, infrastructure development, and good governance reflects a broader national agenda of sustainable economic growth.

As implementation of these projects begins, stakeholders in business, agriculture, and industry are optimistic that Tanga will reclaim its position as a major economic hub in Tanzania.
