Samia urges for accountability to honour the late Sokoine

Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has reminded government leaders on the importance of accountability to the appointing authority and the public at large to efficiently honour former Prime Minister, the late Edward Sokoine.
President Hassan made the call during the Commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the late Sokoine's death held in Monduli in Arusha Region.
A mass was held in his remembrance and was attended by President Hassan and Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa among top government leaders.
During the event, the Head of State insisted on the importance of preserving the legacy of former leaders.
She announced plans for the upcoming launch of Edward Sokoine's book, aimed at keeping his legacy alive and drawing lessons from his life, reflecting on recent launch of former premier, Salim Ahmed Salim's book on September 30, 2023, which shares his knowledge.
"It is crucial," she stressed, "That we continue to uphold his legacy and ensure that their wisdom permeates through our educational institutions, discussions, and debates and reach the youth."
President Hassan underscored former premier Sokoine's dedication to accountability and hardwork, urging current leaders to emulate those principles.
Sokoine, she recalled, prioritised overseeing government decisions and emphasised the need for leaders to be exemplary in their conduct.
Highlighting Sokoine's multifaceted contributions, including his role in the liberation of Africa, the war against Idi Amin, and economic governance, President Hassan emphasised the importance of leaders remaining faithful to their mandates and ensuring timely implementation of government directives.
Expressing concern over leaders who neglect their responsibilities and sow discord, President Hassan condemned such actions, echoing Sokoine's stance against such divisive behaviour.
She commended the Sokoine family for their efforts in honouring his memory, underscoring the importance of educating the public, particularly the young generation, about Sokoine's contributions to Tanzania.
President Hassan reiterated Sokoine's belief in education as a catalyst for development, highlighting recent policy improvements aimed at enhancing education, particularly in rural areas.
The head of state also emphasised the importance of skill-based education, outlining plans for rural development and vocational training initiatives.
Furthermore, she called for unity, accountability, and proactive measures in addressing challenges, echoing the enduring spirit of service exemplified by leaders like Sokoine.
Addressing the ongoing flood catastrophe, President Hassan assured the public of government efforts to mitigate the impacts and provide assistance to affected areas.
She urged leaders to collaborate with citizens to effectively address the challenges.
Expressing gratitude for receiving support in organising the memorial service, Ambassador Joseph Sokoine reflected on Sokoine's legacy of prioritising education and equality.
