Karagwe. Seven people have died, and nine others were injured in a road accident involving a lorry and two stationary vehicles in Karagwe District, Kagera Region.

The incident occurred on December 3, 2024, near a produce inspection post at Kihanga village along the Kyaka road. Police attribute the accident to speeding, which caused the lorry driver to lose control.

Kagera Regional Police Commander Brasius Chatanda confirmed the accident and blamed the lorry driver for negligence.

"The lorry collided with two stationary vehicles parked at the produce inspection post for immigration officers to verify passengers’ documents," Mr Chatanda said.

The lorry, which was carrying mixed fruit sacks, including avocados, from Kayanga town in Karagwe District, rammed into a Toyota Hiace passenger van and a Costa bus, both parked at the inspection area.

Commander Chatanda reported that the accident claimed seven lives, including four women, two children, and one man. The nine injured included four men and five women.

The identities of the deceased and injured were not immediately released, as investigations and notifications of their families are ongoing.

The injured are currently receiving treatment at a nearby medical facility, while authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
