Dodoma. The Judiciary of Tanzania has announced it will broadcast live the court proceedings involving opposition politician and Chadema national chairman Tundu Lissu.
The two criminal cases—No. 8606/2025 and 8607/2025—are scheduled for mention and hearing on Monday, June 2, 2025, at the Resident Magistrate’s Court of Dar es Salaam at Kisutu.
While Mr Lissu is expected to appear physically before the court, the Judiciary has urged members of the public to follow the proceedings via a live stream.
According to a public notice issued on June 1, the decision to livestream the session is part of a broader initiative to improve access to justice and strengthen accountability through the use of technology.
“This initiative is part of the Judiciary’s Strategic Plan, which seeks to enhance transparency, accountability, and the use of modern technology in judicial service delivery,” said Mr Gerard Julius Chami, Head of the Information, Education and Communication Unit at the Judiciary.
Despite the public interest in the case, physical access to the courtroom will be highly restricted due to limited space.
According to the judiciary, The Kisutu courtroom can accommodate only 80 people, with a strict allocation system in place include 10 slots for government prosecutors and officials, 60 for defence counsel and their guests, and 10 for accredited journalists.
The Judiciary further noted that more than 10 magistrates will concurrently be conducting various proceedings within the same premises, reinforcing the need to minimise congestion and potential disruptions.
Members of the public interested in following the proceedings have been advised to access the live stream through the Judiciary’s official website and verified social media platforms. The streaming link is expected to go live by 8:30am on Monday.
In-person attendees are also urged to comply with all public health guidelines, particularly those related to infectious diseases, as per the Ministry of Health’s advisory issued on May 20, 2025.
Mr Lissu, a prominent opposition figure and former Member of Parliament, has faced a number of legal challenges over the years. While the charges in the current cases were not detailed in the Judiciary’s announcement, the live broadcast is expected to draw significant national and international interest.
The Judiciary reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law.
“We are committed to delivering justice that is open, timely, and accessible to all. We call on citizens to continue supporting the Judiciary in building a justice system anchored in constitutional principles, the law, and established guidelines,” Mr Chami added.
