Arusha. The Arusha Regional branch of the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) has launched investigations into several development projects across six districts in the region.
The probe is in response to directives from Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda who identified several shortfalls in the way some development projects have been undertaken in his region.
Makonda raised the challenges during his recent tour of the region's districts and directed PCCB to act.
PCCB has begun inquiries into various projects, including the construction of the Samia Girls' Secondary School in Longido district.
Confirming the commencement of investigations, the PCCB head for Arusha region, Zawadi Ngailo, revealed that inquiries are underway in all areas specified by the directives. However, she declined to provide details regarding the current status of the investigations.
Arusha Regional Police Commander, Justine Masejo, confirmed that several individuals, including personnel from different local authorities, have been interrogated by the police. However, specific figures were not disclosed. Several other individuals have been questioned by their respective disciplinary bodies within their municipalities.
During Makonda's visit to Longido district, he ordered the establishment of a task force to scrutinize all ongoing projects, including the construction of the Samia Girls' Secondary School.
At least Sh3 billion was allocated for the school's construction and while much of the task has been completed, a dining hall remains incomplete. It is estimated that the dining hall will cost Sh460 million.
In Karatu district, investigations were launched following the discovery of officials issuing counterfeit Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD) receipts to collect revenue from horse mackerel traders in the Mang'ola area.
As a result, one accountant from the Karatu municipality has been apprehended, while another accomplice remains at large. The municipality has announced plans to review all revenue sources to identify any potential irregularities.
In Monduli district, eight officials face disciplinary action over allegations of misappropriating Sh52 million, while in Arumeru, the Bwawani Ward Executive Officer, Simon Kaaya, has been implicated in instigating conflicts within the ward.
Furthermore, PCCB has uncovered two officials from the Arusha City Council allegedly involved in document forgery, revenue evasion, and misappropriation of public funds.
These investigations were initiated following complaints from the Chairman of the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators (Tato), Wilbard Chambulo, who alleged discrepancies in service tax payments and receipts.
