Tanzania expected to announce schedule for local government elections Thursday

What you need to know:

  • The Minister of State in the President’s Office - Regional Administration and Local Governments, Mr Mohammed Mchengerwa, will issue the announcement in the afternoon

Dodoma. The whistle for the 2024 local government elections is expected to be blown on Thursday, August 15, 2024, the government has confirmed.

The Minister of State in the President’s Office - Regional Administration and Local Governments, Mr Mohammed Mchengerwa, will issue the announcement in the afternoon, according to the head of communications at the ministry, Ms Nteghenjwa Hosseah.

“This announcement will provide various details on how the elections will be conducted and the entire sequence of events,” she said.

Among the details expected to be highlighted are the rules for the election of the local leaders in hamlets and neighbourhoods.

The local election regulations require the minister responsible for the local elections to issue a public announcement about the elections, in Kiswahili and English newspapers which are widely distributed in the country, at least 90 days before the election day.

The announcement will also clarify the election schedule and related activities, as well as the key election requirements according to the laws and regulations.

One of the positive aspects welcomed by political parties and the public is that the election will be conducted without any unopposed candidates, unlike in previous elections.

Tanzania conducts the civic polls after every five years to elect the local leaders.
