Dar es Salaam. Famed conjoined twins Maria and Consolata Mwakikuti have died.

The twins passed away Saturday (June 2) night at Iringa Regional Hospital, according to reports confirmed by Iringa District Commissioner Richard Kasesela.

“They fought for their lives” he told Mwananchi Digital via phone. “I heard about their passing at 7 – and because I was at the hospital I went to check in.”

“It’s true. They are gone.” An official announcement from the hospital says the first twin died at 7PM, with the other passing on sometime after 9PM.

The twins had been admitted at Iringa Hospital due to complications from a chronic heart condition.

They had been at that particular facility in December last year, and were later referred to the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute at Muhimbili National Hospital.

After two months at JKCI, they were released back to the care of Iringa Hospital on May 17, where they were until their unfortunate passing last night.

Maria and Consolata were born in Makete, Njombe in 1996.

They received their primary education at Ikonda Primary, and went on to do their O’Levels at Maria Consolata Secondary School in Kilolo.

They went on to finish their sixth form at Udzungwa Secondary, and, at the time of their death, were taking a teaching degree at the Catholic University of Ruaha (RUCU).
