Tanzania spends Sh750 billion annually to combat HIV

Dar es Salaam. The Minister of Health, Jenista Mhagama, has stated that the Government spends Sh400,000 per Tanzanian living with HIV each year, amounting to Sh750 billion for 1.7 million people living with HIV.
Jenista made the statement today, Sunday, December 1, 2024, during the commemoration of World AIDS Day, which is being marked nationally in Songea, Ruvuma region, at the Maji Maji grounds, with the Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, as the chief guest.
"It is estimated that every person living with HIV in our country requires no less than Sh400,000 each year, and as we know, there are 1.7 million people with HIV in the country. This means we are spending over Sh750 billion annually to combat HIV and AIDS within our nation.
"The cost is significant, and we have every reason to prevent new infections in the country. We must ensure that those on treatment are suppressing the virus by providing the appropriate care and ensuring that all people living with HIV continue to suppress the virus and are supported in their well-being," said Minister Jenista.
