Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has received significant recognition in the tourism and hospitality industry, securing five major awards at the 2024 World Travel Awards, including the prestigious title of Africa's Leading Destination.
Other awards garnered by the East African nation include Africa’s Leading National Park, awarded to Serengeti National Park, and Africa’s Leading Tourist Board, presented to the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB).
In addition, Altezza Travel was named Tanzania’s Leading Tour Operator, while Arusha-based Gran Melia was crowned Tanzania’s Leading Hotel.
Dickson Muganda, from Altezza Travel, a leading operator of Mt. Kilimanjaro treks, noted, "In 2019, the pre-pandemic year, we had twice fewer customers than in 2024. This instills confidence in the industry and in the investments we're making." The growth reflects not only the hard work of tour operators but also the rising demand for Tanzania's unique travel experiences.
When asked why he thinks Tanzania was selected as Africa's leading destination over other popular spots, Muganda said, "Tanzania's tourism remains authentic. Despite the increasing number of tourists, we don't face overcrowding. This benefits the wildlife, the environment, and overall sustainable development. By maintaining relatively high park fees, Tanzania attracts high-end tourists, which helps the industry grow in a sustainable manner."
These accolades highlight Tanzania’s growing prominence as a leader in East African tourism.
The country’s efforts to preserve natural beauty, coupled with significant investments in tourism infrastructure, ensure that visitors enjoy an unforgettable experience.
The improvements have contributed to a surge in tourist arrivals, with numbers surpassing pre-pandemic levels and optimism shared across the industry.
"In 2019, the year before the pandemic, we had half as many customers as we did in 2024,” said Dickson Muganda of Altezza Travel, a leading operator of Mt. Kilimanjaro treks.
"This growth instills confidence in the industry and in the investments we are making," he added.
Mr Muganda attributed the increase to both the hard work of tour operators and the rising demand for Tanzania's unique travel experiences.
On Tanzania's recognition as Africa's Leading Destination, Mr Muganda emphasised the authenticity of the country's tourism offerings.
“Despite the growing number of tourists, we don’t face overcrowding. This benefits the wildlife, the environment, and supports sustainable development,” he explained.
“By maintaining relatively high park fees, Tanzania attracts high-end tourists, which helps the industry grow sustainably,” Mr Muganda added.
