Tanzanian botanist honoured by Japanese embassy

Dar es Salaam. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan has honoured 88-year-old Tanzanian, Mr Christopher Ruffo, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to promoting relations between Japan and Tanzania.
Speaking today, Monday, after handing over the award, Japan's Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Yasushi Misawa, highlighted the significance of the honorary award.
Established in 1984, the Japanese Foreign Minister’s Commendation is awarded to individuals and groups who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the international field, primarily for their efforts in promoting relations between Japan and other countries and regions.
He said the commendations also play a crucial role in enhancing Japanese public awareness and support for the activities of the recipients.

He has since become a highly respected self-taught botanist in Tanzania and across East Africa.
At 88 years old, Mr Ruffo continues to work diligently from his home laboratory in Morogoro, where he imparts his knowledge to those who follow in his footsteps.
His extensive body of work, comprising numerous students and publications, underscores his role in establishing the foundations of botany in Tanzania.
Reflecting on Mr Ruffo's remarkable achievements, Ambassador Misawa said Mr Ruffo's contributions have significantly advanced academic exchange in the field of botany between Tanzania and Japan.
He becomes the third person to receive the award. “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to him for his longstanding cooperation with Japanese researchers on specimen identification,” the Ambassador said.
Speaking after receiving the prestigious accolade, Mr Ruffo said, “I would like to thank everyone who has made this possible. It’s by the grace of God.Today is a special day that I will never forget in my life. This award is a sign of your gratitude for my efforts on behalf of my family, employees, and friends, all of whom have been a constant source of encouragement and support."
