Tanzanian held in South Africa for drug trafficking

What you need to know:

Drugs Control and Enforcement Authority director general Rogers Siyanga told The Citizen on Sunday, September 02, that Mr Hao was arrested on Saturday, September 1, in Durban.

Dar es Salaam.  A 42-year-old Tanzanian, Mr Richard Andrew Hao, has been arrested in South Africa after allegedly being found with one kilogramme of heroin in his car.

Drugs Control and Enforcement Authority director general Rogers Siyanga told The Citizen on Sunday, September 02, that Mr Hao was arrested on Saturday, September 1, in Durban.

Mr Siyanga said the suspect was holding a Tanzanian passport number AB408563, claiming that the accused is being used as the country’s drugs distribution agent.

“We are investigating the matter to establish where he comes from, but at the moment, he is still being held by the South African police, who are still questioning him,” he said.

“Drug trafficking is a criminal offence, so once they conclude investigation, the law will take its course.”

According to Mr Siyanga, Mr Hao was arrested with heroine, which was being trafficked to Durban from Johannesburg.

He warned Tanzanians to avoid being used by drug businessmen in distributing drugs because they will rot in prison when they are arrested.

Recently, a resident of Sinai Area in Mtwara Region, Mr Ally Hemed, was arrested for trafficking 800 grams of heroin hidden in a plastic bag.

The suspect who was one of the distribution agents was trying to smuggle the substance into the country from Mozambique.
