Dar es Salaam. The Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court has granted Tanzanian opposition leader and Chadema chairman Tundu Lissu permission to represent himself in his ongoing treason case.
Lissu, who appeared in court backed by a legal team of over 30 lawyers, made the request before Senior Resident Magistrate Franko Kiswaga after the lawyers introduced themselves.
In response, Magistrate Kiswaga approved the request, stating that Lissu would represent himself until he chooses otherwise.
“From this point forward, the prosecution will address its responses directly to the accused. The court has granted his request to self-represent, unless and until he decides to change that position,” said Magistrate Kiswaga.
He further directed court security officers not to obstruct Lissu from receiving documents from his legal team during court sessions.
Responding on behalf of the prosecution, State Attorney Nassoro Katuga said the State had no objection to Lissu representing himself.
On the issue of access to documents while in remand, he noted that the matter falls under the authority of prison officials.
