Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Shipping Agents Corporation (TASAC) has announced plans to purchase six new search and rescue boats and launch a project to enhance maritime safety.

TASAC Director General Mohamed Salum stated that over Sh2 billion would be allocated for the purchase of these boats in the 2024/2025 financial year.

He mentioned that one search and rescue boat is already operational in Dar es Salaam, and the remaining six will be deployed to various locations such as Tanga, Mtwara, Kigoma, and Bukoba.

Salum acknowledged the challenges faced by ports like Nyamisati, particularly the lack of search and rescue boats.

He emphasized the critical role these boats play in safeguarding sailors and responding to emergencies.

Radhia Jumanne, a boat user at Nyamisati Port, expressed relief at the government's initiative to procure new rescue boats. She mentioned that the absence of such boats has been a cause for concern during adverse weather conditions.

Issa Unemba, the Port Manager at Nyamisati Port, echoed Jumanne's concerns, highlighting the urgent need for search and rescue boats.

He also emphasized the necessity of establishing a Tanzania Revenue Authority office for handling export cargo and constructing an asphalt road to boost port revenue.

Unemba noted significant progress at the port, with cargo tonnage increasing from 200 tonnes to 300-400 tonnes per month and passenger numbers rising from 2,000 to 4,000. He attributed this growth to ongoing port improvements.

TASAC Board Chairman Musa Mandia commended the advancements at Nyamisati Port, noting that 95 percent of the board's directives for improvement have been implemented.

He expressed satisfaction with enhanced lighting, improved berths, and ongoing infrastructure upgrades.

The search and rescue project is in its initial planning stages, with TASAC seeking funding to establish multiple rescue centers.

This initiative aims to strengthen maritime safety and provide prompt assistance during emergencies.

TASAC's commitment to enhancing maritime safety through the procurement of new rescue boats and the development of a comprehensive search and rescue project demonstrates the organization's dedication to protecting sailors and ensuring a secure maritime environment.
