Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has suspended the online content services licence of Vapper Tech Limited, operator of JamiiForums, for 90 days, effective September 6, 2025.

TCRA Director General, Dr Jabiri Bakari, said in a public notice that the decision followed allegations that JamiiForums, through its website and social media platforms, had published content deemed misleading and insulting to both the Government and the President.

TCRA said the posts contravened the Online Content Regulations of 2020 and amendments of 2022 and 2025.

The regulator further argued that the content undermined peace and cohesion, offended Tanzanian cultural values, and tarnished the country’s image abroad.

“By the authority vested under the Electronic and Postal Communications Act, Cap. 306, TCRA has suspended the Online Content Services Licence issued to Vapper Tech Limited (JamiiForums) and blocked access to the platform,” the notice reads in part.

The announcement did not disclose the specific content that prompted the suspension, but stressed that the authority would intensify monitoring of digital platforms to ensure compliance and safeguard the public interest.

JamiiForums, often described as Tanzania’s most influential online discussion platform, has built a reputation as a space for whistleblowing, civic dialogue, and public accountability.

Its suspension is likely to stir debate on freedom of expression and regulatory oversight.

Efforts by `The Citizen to obtain a response from JamiiForums management were unsuccessful by press time.
