The Citizen Newspaper publisher named champion in Tanzania’s print media market: study

The publisher of Mwananchi, The Citizen and Mwanaspoti newspapers is the most read newspaper company followed by the IPP Media Group and New Habari Corporation.
Dar es Salaam. A new report by the Reporters without Boarders (RSF) and the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) named Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) as the company with the highest readership concentration of all print media outlets in Tanzania.
The report, which was launched on November 15, 2018, covered a total of 175 print media outlets across Tanzania.
Known as the Media Ownership Monitor (MOM)-Tanzania, the study sought to examine the issue of media ownership and how they can affect the reliability of information they provide.
Some of those who attended the launching ceremony which took place at Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam included the German ambassador to Tanzania Dr Detlef Wachter, MCT’s Executive Secretary Kajubi Mukajanga, RSF’s President Dr Michael Rediske and a media guru, Jenerali Ulimwengu.
Mr Ulimwengu delivered a keynote speech on “Quo vadis –Media Tanzania? Challenges for Media in the past, the present, and on what comes next”.
The report highlighted that there are currently a total of 99 newspapers and 76 magazines across Tanzania.
It noted however that MCL comes first in the list of the print media houses which share the country’s audience followed by the IPP Media Group, New Habari (2006) Ltd and Tanzania Standard Newspaper (TSN).
In the radio market in the country, which has a total of 156 radio stations, Clouds Entertainment Ltd has a lion’s share of the local audience market followed by the IPP Media Group, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) and Sahara Media Group Ltd.
On the TV market front, which comprises a total of 48 TV stations, the IPP Media Group has the largest audience share followed by Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), Azam Media Ltd and Clouds Entertainment Ltd.
For online market, Jamii Media Co. Ltd leads. It is followed by AYO TV TZA Company Limited, Michuzi Media Group Co. Limited and Muungwana Blog.
The report names radio as the most popular media in the country followed by television, print, websites and social media.
