Tips on how to survive Dar es Salaam's extreme hot weather
Dar es Salaam and other regions have been experiencing heatwaves for a couple of weeks now.
High temperatures have caused discomfort, and health experts say they could lead to cases of heat exhaustion and even death.
The Citizen brings you survival tips to combat hot temperatures courtesy of Dr. Fredirick Mashili, a lecturer at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (Muhas), Department of Physiology.
In extreme heat and humidity, evaporation is slowed, and the body has to work very hard to maintain normal temperatures.
Dr. Mashili says, "Although many people think of drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated during a heatwave, it should be noted that one should also consume electrolyte drinks like coconut water that have potassium, sodium, and manganese so as to replace fluid loss from sweating."
Other things to consider:
Stay inside when it's extremely hot outside, but it is not advised to stay indoors if there is not enough air.
Wear clothes that allow sweat to evaporate so that your body can cool down.
Reduce alcoholic and caffeinated drinks during this period.
Consume coconut water to maintain the body's main cooling mechanism.
Reduce your intake of protein-rich foods, such as red meat. They increase metabolic heat.
Eat fruits and vegetables, which provide extra water.
Stay in a place with open air.
Wear cotton clothes and light-coloured clothes
