Tundu Lissu arrested hours before holding political rally
Arusha. Tundu Lissu, the national vice chairman of Tanzania’s main opposition political party, Chadema, has been arrested in Arusha city for holding a mass meeting without a permit and preventing police officials from doing their job.
Mr. Lissu was arrested along with his bodyguard and three other party leaders hours before holding a political rally in Karatu district.
The former Singida North parliamentarian was expected to hold a rally at Mazingira Bora grounds in the region.
Arusha regional police commander Justine Masejo said that Lissu and three other leaders are being held for questioning, and later legal procedures will proceed.
Chadema’s Arusha region chairman, Mr Elisa Mungure, has confirmed Lissu's arrest together with his bodyguards and other leaders, claiming that they were being taken to Arusha for interrogation.
