TZ NGO brings home global conservation award

 MJUMITA, along with other winners took home a US$10,000 (about Sh20 million) cash award and have the chance to  send representatives to attend an international climate change summit in Paris.

Dar es Salaam/New York –  Tanzanian environmental conservation organization, Mtandao wa Jamii wa Usimamizi wa Misitu Tanzania (MJUMITA) has won the prestigious UNDP Equator Prize 2015.

The award celebrates global community poverty reduction efforts in the face of growing climate change.

The local organisation was declared winner of the international award on Thursday in New York at a ceremony attended by some UN leaders attending the UN’s 70th General Assembly.

 MJUMITA, along with other winners took home a US$10,000 (about Sh20 million) cash award and have the chance to  send representatives to attend an international climate change summit in Paris.

According to Ms Rahima Njaidi, MJUMITA executive director, her organization is ecstatic to receive such global recognition:  “We are very grateful to UNDP for recognising our efforts to bringing about change in the forest sector and improving community livelihoods.”

The director also added that the award is testament to the good results that can come out of policy makers working with local communities to empower them to deal with climate change challenges.
