Under the theme of “Connection, Glory, Future”, the nine-month-long Huawei ICT competition for Sub Saharan Africa was finalized on 19 th February, with over 15 countries and 38 teams sitting for written and laboratory exams.
Tanzanian ICT students from the University of Dar es Salaam and the University of Dodoma emerged among the world's best at the 2021-2022 Huawei ICT competition Sub Saharan Africa.
Under the theme of “Connection, Glory, Future”, the nine-month-long Huawei ICT competition for Sub Saharan Africa was finalized on 19 th February, with over 15 countries and 38 teams sitting for written and laboratory exams. The competition attracted over 15,000 participants from Sub-Saharan Africa.
Launched in the African region just six years ago, the Huawei ICT Competition has developed into the largest ICT skills competition in Africa and the world at large.
The Competition had 2 Tracks: Network Track and Cloud Track. Tanzania was represented by the University of Dar es Salaam (Network teams) and University of Dodoma (Cloud team) each team consisted of 3 students. Tanzanian teams won First Prize (Cloud Track), Second Prize, and Third Prize ( Network Track).
The students are Mafiu Khatibu, Daniel Mathew and Ndabuye Sengayo (UDOM), James Mushi, Erick Shemdoe, and Zuwena Hamoud (UDSM) and Joan Makyao, Kivuyo Kelvin, and Peter Edward (UDSM). All three teams have advanced to the Global Finals to be held in China in May preceded by an Awarding ceremony to be held in South Africa in April this year.
Commenting on the achievement, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, Zanzibar Mr. Ali Khamis Ali said; "As a country, we are proud of these young talented students for their great win in Huawei ICT Competition Regional Finals. Their victory proves the academic excellence of our Higher Learning Institutions. We hope and believe that they will shine and be good ambassadors of Tanzania in the global round.
I commend Huawei for these initiatives and we are expecting to see these efforts more and more for a strong and sustainable ICT talent ecosystem in the country."
Huawei Tanzania Deputy Managing Director, Tom Tao, hailed the students for their great victory saying; “Huawei Technologies will continue to cooperate with the government and Academic Institutions in providing ICT training to young Tanzanian students and ensure that the knowledge and skills that these young talents acquire are relevant in fueling Tanzania's social and economic growth"
Zuwena Hamoud Salum, one of the two first female students to win the Huawei ICT Competition encourage female students to take part in Huawei ICT Competition while expressing her gratitude to the exposure Huawei had accorded to them.
“I urge and encourage fellow female students to grab these opportunities provided by Huawei through Huawei ICT Competition. The platform will enable them to showcase their ICT expertise and prove to the world that women are able and ready to give more contribution in the ICT Sector in the country and the global at large.
So let's grab the chances with our own hands and go for them, let's have the courage and confidence, we can do the best". She said.
Globally the Huawei ICT Competition 2021 covered over 80 countries worldwide, with 150 000 contestants from more than 2,000 universities and colleges. Launched in the African region just six years ago, the Huawei ICT
