Ukerewe moves to curb cholera

Nansio. At least Sh2.1 billion has been spent on the construction of a waste recycling equipment on Nansio Island, Ukerewe District in Mwanza Region.
District Council health officer Joseph Bulugu said over the weekend that the council borrowed the money from Africa Development Bank (AfDB).
The project will go a long way in curbing the outbreak of cholera that has ravaged the area for years, according to Mr Bulugu.
He said half of the 925 people who contracted the cholera in the region last year were from Ukerewe.
Mbesso Construction Company managing director Fidelis Bachwa, said implementation of the project started in June this year.
An engineer at the company, Mr Deus Magesa , said the waste recycling machine has the capacity to preserve 30 tonnes of solid waste for 10 years. It also absorbs and recycles 35,000 litres of dirty water per day.
