Urambo and Kaliua to benefit from reliable electricity supply

Dar es Salaam. Residents of Urambo and Kaliua districts in Tabora will now have access to reliable electricity, which is expected to significantly boost their economic activities, following the activation of a new 132kV power line.
The 115-kilometer-long line, built by Electrical Transmission and Distribution Construction Maintenance Co. Ltd (ETDCO), a subsidiary of Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco), is set to transform the energy landscape in the region.
During the launch event held on March 20 in Tabora, ETDCO's Acting General Manager, Mr. Sadock Mugendi, expressed his gratitude to the government and Tanesco for entrusting them with the implementation of the project. He highlighted that the new power line would ensure a steady and reliable electricity supply, thus fostering economic growth in Urambo and Kaliua.
“We thank the government for its trust in us. This project was executed by local professionals, demonstrating that Tanzanians are capable of delivering electricity infrastructure projects on time and with success,” Mr. Mugendi said.
The Tabora-Katavi Project Manager at Tanesco, Mr. Sospeter Oralo, revealed that the total cost of the project was Sh40 billion, with Sh24 billion allocated for the construction of the 132kV power line connecting Tabora to Urambo. Additionally, Sh6 billion was invested in building the Urambo substation, with funding sourced locally.
Engineer Dismas Massawe, Acting Director of Technical Services at ETDCO, stated that with the activation of this power line, residents of Urambo and Kaliua would benefit from a reliable electricity supply through the Uhuru substation in Urambo District. The substation, which houses a 28 Megawatt transformer, is crucial in meeting the power demands of the area.
Engineer Ntuli Burton, the Project Manager for the Tabora to Urambo line at ETDCO, added that the project began in April 2024 and was initially expected to be completed by June 2025. However, the team managed to finish ahead of schedule, ensuring that Urambo residents could access reliable electricity sooner than anticipated.
“This project will not only improve power access in Urambo and Kaliua but will also contribute to the overall development of Tabora Region,” said Engineer Burton.
With the completion of this project, the people of Urambo and Kaliua can look forward to more consistent electricity supply, which is expected to drive local businesses, support education, and improve quality of life in the region.
