Dar es Salaam. As his tenure as the US Ambassador to Tanzania comes to an end, Michael Battle has expressed heartfelt gratitude for the warmth and hospitality he and his wife, Ms Linda Battle, received since their arrival in January 2023.

In a farewell message posted on the US Embassy's website on January 14, 2025, Ambassador Battle highlighted the memorable milestones and positive experiences during his time in Tanzania.

He thanked the Tanzanian people for their welcoming nature, which has left lasting memories.

Reflecting on his two years in office, Mr Battle noted key events, including the visit of US Vice President Kamala Harris, which marked the beginning of the US-Tanzania Commercial Dialogue.

This agreement aims to enhance bilateral trade and investment by bringing together both the public and private sectors.

The Ambassador also emphasised the importance of the Trans-Africa Continental Railroad project, which was discussed during the recent visit of US President Joe Biden to Angola.

Vice President Dr Philip Mpango represented Tanzania in the talks, highlighting the US’s major role as an investor in the project, which is expected to improve regional trade integration.

Supporting Tanzania’s growth

Ambassador Battle expressed pride in the United States' support for Tanzania’s health, education, and governance sectors.

He fondly recalled his interactions with Tanzanians across the country, particularly those benefiting from US-funded programmes.

“The greatest asset Tanzania has is its people,” he stated, pointing out that the country’s natural resources are secondary to the talent and potential of its citizens.

One of the standout moments of his tenure was his participation in the Youth Democracy Dialogues in August 2023, where he encouraged young Tanzanians to play an active role in strengthening the country's democracy.

“By investing in the brilliant minds of Tanzanian youth, we are investing in a prosperous future for Tanzania,” he said.

Fostering education and innovation

Mr Battle also highlighted the importance of enhancing access to quality education and fostering innovation.

He praised the success of the US-Tanzania Tech Challenge, which invited over 100 tech innovators to develop tools that could support Tanzania’s civic space.

Furthermore, the return of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Threshold project to Tanzania was a significant achievement, aimed at advancing democratic development.

"A mature Tanzanian democratic governance will make Tanzania freer, fairer, and wealthier, enabling the country to fully harness its greatest resource – its people," remarked Ambassador Battle.

A legacy of partnership

Under Battle’s leadership, the US has strengthened its position as Tanzania’s largest development partner.

He celebrated the success of initiatives such as the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), which has improved the lives of millions of Tanzanians by supporting those living with HIV/AIDS and reducing the spread of the virus.

In his travels across the country, the envoy observed the Tanzanian people’s enduring commitment to the principles of unity, human dignity, and cooperation.

“A united Tanzania that respects every citizen’s human dignity will positively impact the world,” he said.

A fond farewell

As he prepares to depart Tanzania, Ambassador Battle expresses his deep affection for both the country and its people.

"It has been the honour of my lifetime to serve as US Ambassador to Tanzania. The dream of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere – a united Tanzania that uplifts all its people- is a vision I will carry with me long after leaving this beautiful country," he says.
