US under secretary John Bass set to visit Tanzania

Dar es Salaam. The acting Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, John Bass, is expected to arrive in Tanzania on Tuesday for a visit that will see him meeting senior government officials and civil society representatives.
The visit is part of his travels to Chad and Tanzania from July 20 to July 25, the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam said in a statement.
In Chad, Mr Bass will consult with senior Chadian leaders on common priorities, including reinforcing bilateral cooperation, providing humanitarian support for refugees, responding to the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and coordinating on regional security.
“In Tanzania, undersecretary Bass will meet with senior Tanzanian government leaders to discuss areas for increased bilateral cooperation, progress on political and economic reforms, human rights, and regional peace and security. He will also engage with civil society leaders on issues related to Tanzania’s democratic trajectory,” the embassy stated.
Mr Bass was confirmed by the US Senate on December 17, 2021, as the undersecretary for management. The secretary of state designated him as acting undersecretary for political affairs on March 23, 2024.
He served as senior advisor at the Foreign Service Institute from 2020–2021, US ambassador to Afghanistan from 2017–2020, US ambassador to Turkey from 2014–2017, executive secretary of the State Department from 2012–2014, and US ambassador to Georgia from 2009 to 2012.
He began his diplomatic career in 1988 and has also served in positions in US missions in Iraq, Italy, Belgium, and Chad.
