Various leaders and mourners gather at Karimjee to honour Prof Sarungi

Dar es Salaam. Former and current government officials, political leaders, medical professionals, and mourners have gathered at Karimjee Grounds in Dar es Salaam to pay their final respects to Prof Philemon Sarungi, a distinguished orthopaedic surgeon, politician, and former minister.

Prof Sarungi, who passed away on March 5, 2025, at the age of 89, will be laid to rest today, Monday, March 10, 2025, at Kinondoni Cemetery.

Among those in attendance are former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba, former CCM Secretary-General Abdulrahman Kinana, and Joseph Butiku, who served as Secretary to the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere. Ambassador Christopher Liundi is also present.

Opposition leaders, including Chadema Chairman Tundu Lissu, Vice Chairman (Mainland) John Heche, and Central Committee Member Godbless Lema, have arrived, along with former ACT Wazalendo leader Zitto Kabwe.

Also present is Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo.

Various medical professionals, led by the Tanzania Orthopaedic Association (TOA), arrived early to pay tribute to their late colleague, whose contributions to the country’s healthcare system remain invaluable.

Prof Sarungi, remembered for his dedication to public service and patriotism, previously served as Member of Parliament for Rorya, Minister of Health, Minister of Education, Regional Commissioner, and Minister of Defence and National Service.
