Vodacom and Sanlam launch M-Wekeza, a mobile investment platform for Tanzanians

Managing Director of M-Pesa Tanzania, Mr. Epimack Mbeteni, speaking at the launch of M-Wekeza service by Vodacom in collaboration with Sanlam Investment recently in Dar es Salaam.

Dar es Salaam – Vodacom Tanzania, in partnership with Sanlam Investments East Africa, has launched M-Wekeza, a revolutionary mobile-first investment platform aimed at making digital investments accessible to millions of Tanzanians.

The platform, designed for M-Pesa users, allows individuals to start investing with as little as Sh10,000 and earn competitive returns of up to 13 percent per annum.

This innovative initiative marks a significant expansion of Vodacom M-Pesa into the capital markets, offering Tanzanians a unique opportunity to grow their wealth through digital investments.

M-Wekeza will enable users to invest in a variety of financial instruments, including government bonds, stocks, and other secure capital market products, all managed by the reputable Sanlam Investments.

Epimack Mbeteni, M-Pesa Director at Vodacom Tanzania, highlighted the platform’s potential during the launch event.

“M-Wekeza is a major step forward in our mission to empower Tanzanians through digital financial services. It’s designed to be simple, accessible, and rewarding, making investing easy for everyone—from seasoned investors to first-timers,” he said.

The launch of M-Wekeza is in line with Vodacom’s broader vision of driving financial inclusion across the country. By integrating M-Wekeza with M-Pesa, the company aims to bring investment opportunities to both urban and rural areas, providing a convenient and secure way for Tanzanians to access capital markets.

The platform will operate under the oversight of the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA), ensuring transparency, security, and trust for all users. CMSA CEO Nicodemus Mkama emphasized the significance of the initiative.

“The introduction of M-Wekeza is a transformative step towards democratizing access to investments in Tanzania. This collaboration between Vodacom, Sanlam Investments, and the CMSA makes capital market products available to all Tanzanians, fostering a financially inclusive and economically vibrant society."

Sanlam Investments East Africa’s CEO, Jonathan Stichbury, also expressed his commitment to supporting financial inclusion through the platform. “At Sanlam Investments, we are dedicated to offering innovative financial solutions. This partnership with Vodacom represents a significant leap towards achieving financial inclusion in Tanzania. M-Wekeza provides daily interest on investments and allows for instant withdrawals, making it a flexible and rewarding option for everyone,” he said.

The launch of M-Wekeza strengthens Vodacom M-Pesa’s role as a leader in digital financial services and underscores its ongoing commitment to enhancing financial opportunities for Tanzanians. By offering a secure and user-friendly platform, Vodacom aims to empower individuals across the country to take control of their financial futures and participate in Tanzania’s growing capital markets.
