Why CCM's Kinana resigned as party Secretary General

What you need to know:

The Secretary General of Tanzania's ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Mr Abdulrahman Kinana has resigned.

Dar es Salaam. The Secretary General of Tanzania's ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Mr Abdulrahman Kinana has resigned.

His resignation has become public on Monday, during the National Electoral Committee (NEC) meeting, where six Central Committee (CC) members were elected. Mr Kinana has been Secretary-General of Chama Cha Mapinduzi, the ruling party since 2012.

Addressing the NEC members, Mr Kinana said: “We must agree that there is time to rest and time to work. I understand the difficulty you are facing. I have received some text messages and I can see it in your faces… You are still asking, can't you change your mind? We have had seven SGs since CCM was formed. So, it is not an unusual thing for the current SG to leave his position.”

On his part, CCM's Chairman and President of Tanzania Mr John Magufuli, expressed his desire to continue working with Kinana. Mr Magufuli also revealed that Mr Kinana had brought up the subject several times before. However, after much thought, Mr Magufuli decided that it was indeed time.

“I used to change the subject, everytime Kinana brought it up,” Mr Magufuli said with a laugh.
He also revealed, that this was what their meeting on Sunday was about. Mr Magufuli and Mr Kinana met at the State House on Sunday. “I called him yesterday, thinking that maybe he had changed his mind. He said, no, please let me rest. So we have agreed to let him go. We will have to find another.”
