World’s largest floating book fair arrives in Tanzania
Dar es Salaam. The Logos Hope, the world's largest floating book fair, has arrived in Tanzania for a two-week visit. The ship will be docked in Dar es Salaam until October 22, 2023.
The Logos Hope is a project of GBA Ships, a Christian organization that aims to provide access to knowledge and resources to people around the world.
Home to over 5,000 fictional and non-fictional books, the book fair is giving Tanzanians a chance to interact with the literature community and explore a diverse range of books on topics such as Christianity, management, leadership, cookery, and African literature. All books are sold in the form of units starting at 100 units, which equals to Sh6,000.
"This is our second time to visit Tanzania," said Alessandro Dal Corso, Media Relations Officer for Logos Hope. "Our first time was in 2016, and we're excited to be back."
The Logos Hope is staffed by a crew of over 350 volunteers from 65 different countries. The volunteers live on the ship and help to run the library, as well as lead Bible studies and other activities.
"We're here to share our love of books with the people of Tanzania," said Dal Corso. "We want to provide access to knowledge and resources that can help people learn and grow."
The Logos Hope is open to the public from 10am to 5pm, Monday through Saturday. Admission is free.
The Logos Hope was built in 1973 as a car ferry. In 1988, it was purchased by GBA Ships and converted into a floating book fair. The ship has visited over 150 countries and territories since then, and has served over 50 million people.
