Dar es Salaam. A race involving rare vintage cars is scheduled to take place in Zanzibar on August 26.

The star attraction will be a 59-year-old Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire.

Zanzibar Information, Tourism, Culture and Sports minister Rashid Juma said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the race was meant to promote tourist attractions in Zanzibar.

“Both vintage and non-vintage cars are expected to participate in the rally, which will be flagged off at 10am,” he said.

“The aim of this special event is to market our attractions. We want to attract as many tourists as possible to come and visit our historical sites. Visitors will now be able to use cars to reach the sites during their tours in Zanzibar.”

The race will be flagged off in Stone Town (Park Hyatt Zanzibar) and will end at Kiwengwa (Melia Zanzibar).

Park Hyatt Zanzibar general manager Garry Friend said the rally would involve two pit stops along the way where participants would take part in a treasure hunt at the House of Wonders before proceeding to Melia Zanzibar.

“We are honoured to partner with various stakeholders in the tourism industry in this car rally meant to promote the islands as a preferred tourist destination,” he said.

The Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire is a stately motorcar of Britain’s rich motoring heritage

Manufactured in 1958, this particular unit was for 33 years in British family ownership, including three owners within the family who were part of the British parliament.
