NGO backs reforestation campaign

Geita. A non-government organisation dealing with environmental protection in Geita Region plans to promote the planting of 10 trees around every household in Nyang’hwale district.

According to officials from the organisation known as Shirika la Okoa Sayari (Shiosa) the reforestation campaign is part of an effort to save the environment from activities like small-scale mining, livestock keeping and deforestation.

Shiosa secretary general Mohamed Ahmed announced the plan on Monday during the visit of President Jakaya Kikwete who complimented the efforts made by environmental protection groups aiming to bring green revolution in the region.

Mr Ahmed said that President Jakaya Kikwete’s compliments have encouraged them to accelerate the planting of trees to beautify the Nyang’hwale as well as the new Geita Region.

“We congratulate the President for his acknowledgements and for encouraging us to make sure we get back our environment.

Nyang’hwale District, has given us a challenge that promotes achieving our goal,” said Mr Ahmed. He said that since their registration in 2011, Shiosa has made various environmental improvements in the new region of Geita.

The organisation has been able to provide environmental education in both secondary and primary schools and distributing seedlings for reforestation in high schools .

He said that their expectation is to see every household in the village or the district is comprised of enough trees for the green revolution.
