Dar es Salaam. Already crowned champions, Simba Sports Club have maintained their unbeaten run in the ongoing Mainland Premier League after beating Singida United 1-0 at the Namfua Stadium.
Simba, who will be handed the title on May 20 at the National Stadium when they meet Kagera Sugar, scored their lone goal in the 24th minute through Shomari Kapombe following a good pass from John Bocco.
Despite Singida United’s dominance, Simba’s defenders stood firm to thwart any attacks.
Singida United strikers, Kambale Salita, Danny Usengimana and Lubinda Mundia fought hard to revenge a 4-0 defeat by the Msimbazi Street boys in the first leg at the National Stadium, but could not trouble Simba’s first choice goalkeeper, Aishi Manula.
The victory means Simba have managed to win 20 matches and drawn eight. The team has scored 61 goals and conceded only three goals.
The team’s Ugandan import Emmanuel Okwi is also leading the race for the golden boot award with 20 goals, while John Bocco who is the team captain is placed second with 14 goals.
Also in the race is Marcel Boneventure of Majimaji who has so far scored 13 goals and Young African’s Obrey Chirwa in fourth with 12 goals.
Simba now have collected 68 points after playing 28 matches. This is 16 points ahead of second-placed Azam FC, which has collected 52 points after 28 matches.
Simba SC captain John Bocco said their fighting spirit in the encounter is the key to the team’s success, leading them to win the title with three matches in hand.
“We did our best in the encounter and in other league games. We still have the task of doing even better in international competitions as well as maintaining our status next season.
We need to maintain our unity in order to dominate the league,” said Bocco.
Siginda United captain Mudathir Yahaya said they tried their best in the encounter but made mistakes that allowed the Dar es Salaam team to clinch the vital victory.
