Dar es Salaam. Tanzania Swimmers are leaving for Kampala today ahead of the inauguration of Cana zone three championships scheduled to start on Saturday.

Speaking yesterday, Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) secretary general Ramadhan Namkoveka said that the swimmers would leave from three destinations. The first destination will comprise swimmers Emma Imhoff (based in Mwanza) and Sonia Tumiotto who will fly from Dar es Salaam.

Namkoveka said that swimmers Josephine Oosterhuis and Jackline Kortland would fly from Kilimanjaro International Airport as they are based in Arusha Region and Isam Sepetu will arrive at Entebbe International Airport straight from Zambia where he is based.

He said that one of the officials recognized by Fina, Khalid Rushaka, has already arrived in Kampala since yesterday ready to officiate the competition. Rushaka will join other officials from other countries in the zone. “All swimmers are in top shape, they trained intensively ahead of the event, they are looking to scoop medals.

“We also congratulate Rushaka for his appointment and hoping that will use opportunity well and his experience in officiating will help to transfer the experience to our National Club Championship later next year,” said Namkoveka.

He said that the Cana zone three will be held for three days from December 11. He said earlier, he had planned to send 10 swimmers, but due to lack of funds, they failed to raise $12,000 (Sh24 million) for the event. “The team now is focused to do well individually despite of swimmers numerical disadvantage. We are looking to improve their time, and if possible medals. We haven’t received psych sheet which could help us to know where we stand. It’s my hope that my swimmers will stand up and show case their talent and will be counted,” he said.

This will be the first time for the Cana zone three to organize such event. Earlier the Cana zone three and Cana zone four used to be staged together.
