Dar es Salaam. Four years ago, Young Africans Sports Club (Yanga) was in dire need of financial support to bring it to vibrancy.

That was also precisely the time when their archrivals, Simba, were in their form and commanding respect within and outside Tanzania.

It was at that time that a team of ardent Yanga supporters, led by Antony Mavunde, a Tanzanian Minister, came up with the solutions.

During a candid interview with The Citizen’s sister publication, Mwanaspoti, Mavunde disclosed the intricate steps taken to secure the backing of Ghalib Said Mohammed (GSM) for the esteemed football club.

"I am proud to have played a part in ensuring the stability and prosperity of Yanga," stated Mavunde, reflecting on his role in the club's journey. "It was a challenging time, but with collective determination, we managed to secure the support needed to propel the club forward."

Mavunde's commitment to the club extended beyond his ministerial duties, as he actively engaged in fundraising initiatives aimed at bolstering Yanga's financial resources. His pivotal contribution of Sh300 million during a crucial fundraising event underscored his dedication to the club's welfare.

Following the successful fundraising drive, Mavunde orchestrated the introduction of GSM as Yanga's sponsor, marking a significant turning point for the club. GSM's partnership injected renewed vigor into Yanga, setting the stage for enhanced competitiveness both domestically and internationally.

Reflecting on the journey, Mavunde expressed gratitude to fellow stakeholders and highlighted the collaborative efforts that underpinned Yanga's resurgence. "It was a collective endeavor, and I commend all those who contributed to our success," remarked Mavunde.

As Yanga continues to pursue excellence on the football pitch, Antony Mavunde's role in securing the club's sponsorship stands as a testament to his unwavering dedication to the club's legacy and his vision for its enduring success.

Transformation as turning point

The turning point occurred when Muvunde’s morale-boosting committee presented its progress report to the then Yanga’s chairman, Mzee Msola (Dr Mshindo). Among the committee’s recommendations was a fundamental shift in the club's operational framework. The aim, says Mavunde, was to prevent the recurrence of past challenges and ensure a more sustainable future for the club.

"I extend heartfelt gratitude to past leaders, including Mzee Msola, and the current leadership, such as Engineer Hersi (Said) and his assistant Arafat (Haji), for their commitment to implementing and refining these strategies. We are now witnessing promising developments, and upon completion, we aspire to rank among Africa's premier clubs, operating under a modernized framework."

Running costs

During the fundraising efforts, contributions from members and fans, although modest, proved immensely valuable, he says.

However, he said, a crucial lesson was learnt during that time: to deeply respect those who invest in football. “We often witness Simba or Yanga competing internationally, but behind the scenes, there are individuals who tirelessly ensure things progress, regardless of the personal sacrifices they make," he says.

Tough task of convincing GSM

"Securing GSM's sponsorship wasn't a straightforward task. When we approached him, he, being a businessman, understandably required time for deliberation. Maulid Kitenge and I spent eight hours meticulously crafting our argument to persuade Ghallib to join forces with us,” says Mavunde.

However, he says, if you were to ask him [GSM] today about decisions he stands by unwaveringly, sponsoring and supporting Yanga would undoubtedly be at the forefront.

"It was a journey that demanded precision and patience. I'm gratified because now Ghallib is widely regarded as a leading investor renowned for his invaluable support to Yanga. His commitment goes beyond mere profit; it's a testament to his dedication to the club. Equally heartening is witnessing the profound affection Yanga fans have developed for him."

GSM’s plans for Yanga

Mavunde believes GSM plans are extensive, and if they come to fruition, Yanga will soar to greater heights.

“I refrain from delving into further details; you'll witness them unfold in due time. However, it's worth noting that we have adept leaders within our club, including those with roles in CAF like Hersi. Their presence is a significant asset, and it's evident that the beacon of progress shines brightly for us," he says.

Investment plans

The idea of share investment for members, according to Mr Mavunde, is a concept that demands thorough education. Therefore, if they choose to allocate up to 49 percent for ownership, it's likely to attract a significant number of members eager to invest in their beloved club.

"This is uncharted territory for our country, so it requires meticulous attention and seriousness to make it a reality; otherwise, their goal may remain elusive,” he says.

According to Mr Mavunde, there was a pressing need to ensure that this educational initiative reaches the club’s members and fans so they can grasp the full benefits of the proposal.

Without a deep understanding, he says, the endeavor may face hurdles.

“However, I have confidence in our leaders' ability to navigate this challenge effectively," says Mr Mavunde who doubles as Member of Parliament for Dodoma Urban.

Players’ registration plans

On the transfer of players, Mr Mavunde says, the matter falls squarely under the purview of the executive committee. However, as a board member, he says, his role focuses on overseeing the club's assets and operational framework. From his perspective however, everything appears to be on track in the transfer department. The efforts to improve the squad, he says, were yielding positive results, evident in the team's continued success in competitions.

"I must also acknowledge the leadership of Hersi and his team, who have demonstrated profound understanding of the club's needs and necessary actions,” he says, adding that under the guidance of Mr Hersi, everything seems to be aligning perfectly.

The leadership has been instrumental in steering the club forward during their tenure, and initiatives such as the trustee council and plans for self-sustainability were particularly commendable.

"You, the press, have witnessed the strides made by this administration through various lucrative agreements aimed at bolstering Yanga's financial standing and lifting it out of past hardships," he says.

Yanga in Premier League

"In my view, the team has performed exceptionally well up to this point, owing to the quality of both the squad and the coaching staff. Although we have garnered numerous points and secured many victories, the league has yet to conclude. Nonetheless, we hold faith in the team's current trajectory.

"At present, Yanga exhibits remarkable unity with minimal discord. This solidarity fosters significant stability within the team, enabling continuous improvement. This is a source of joy for every supporter, member, and even the leadership, all fully committed to the team's success."
